Hmm, suspend/resume has worked great on my Inspiron 5000e since at least the
last ACPICA update and still does.

Ok, the double fault is likely do to exhausting the stack due to a recursion
loop of some sort. If Akira-san (apologies if I get the name wrong) can
reproduce the double fault on a debug kernel over a serial console and use 'x'
to dump the contents of the stack (use %esp to see where the bottom of the
stack is). For example, in the panic inthe message %esp was 0xc80c4ff0, so
doing 'x/x 0xc80c5000,64' or some such would probably get a good chunk of stack
trace. Also, save the %eip in the message. Then you can reboot and load up
gdb -k on the kernel.debug. You can do a 'l' (or list) of the address in eip
to see the source lint it died at. If that isn't just recursing on itself,
then you can look at the stackdump for words that are kernel text adresses.
You can do 'l' on those addresses to try to figure out the stack backtrace and
find the recursion. I can help with this part if needed.
